A herder walks into the setting sun of the desert, his camels silhouetted against the fading rays and the ever-present dust.
Thousands of miles away, a stone church stands isolated on a bleak hillside, its Celtic crosses speaking of an ancient way of life and death.
Both are separated by time and distance but show nature at its most beautiful and uncompromising â befitting a photographic competition called the Great Outdoors.
They are among the best of more than 800 entries in the contest, organised by the Society of Nature and Wildlife Photographers.
âThey were encouraged to let their creative juices flourish,â said spokesman Phil Jones. âImages could include landscapes, seascapes, panoramas, or whatever their creativity captured.â
The society is based in Wales but has a global membership. âThe pictures came in from all over the planet,â said Mr Jones. âWe have been blown away by the variety.â
