A TASMANIAN amateur photographer has snapped up the National Parks photography competition in the UK.

University of Tasmania student Fraser Johnston beat 334 entries to take out the prize with an image of his girlfriend canoeing at sunrise on Surlingham Broad, in the Broads, Norfolk, UK.

“It’s a beautiful memory of a beautiful winter’s morning setting off in the canoe after camping the night before,” Mr Johnston said.

“The position the shot is taken from puts the viewer right in the action.”

Mr Johnston moved to Norwich in 2007 after meeting his Norfolk girlfriend while she was in Tasmania.

“I learned to love the landscape, especially after we bought an old hand-made canoe,” he said.

“About this time I took up photography and we started exploring the Broads, putting a tent and some warm clothes in our leaky old canoe and setting off from Norwich, heading down river for the weekend.”

Head judge Ben Fogle said the image was a stand-out choice.

“It’s evocative and moving. A beautiful winter’s scene that makes you want to dive into the image.”

Mr Johnston said photography was more a hobby than a career.

“It would be fantastic to make a living out of it, but it’s not something that I’ve ever considered seriously. I just like the challenge.”
